AFC Asian Cup 9-31 January 2015
The 16 best footballing nations in Asia are coming to Australia for the 2015 Asian Cup. 32 matches will be spread across 23 days of competition with the first Group game being played in Melbourne between Australia and Kuwait on the 9th of January. There are 5 host cities in all with 7 matches being played in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra whilst 4 matches will be played in Newcastle. The final will be held in Sydney on the 31st of January. Can defending champions Japan win their 5th Asian Cup or will Australia go one better than the 2011 tournament and win for the first time on home soil??
Australian Open 19 January – 01 February 2015
The worlds best tennis players will once again head to Melbourne Park for the 1st Grand Slam of 2015. Prize money on offer is an incredible $36.3 million for the tournament. Melbourne truly comes alive during these 2 weeks with loads of things to see and do around Melbourne Park other than just watching the tennis. If you can’t make it to Melbourne there are plenty of lead-up tournaments where you can see some great tennis. Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide will all be hosting tournaments prior to the Australian Open starting.
Santos Tour Down Under 17-25 January 2015
If cycling is your thing then head to Adelaide for the Santos Tour Down Under, the first stop on the UCI world cycling calendar for 2015. This event sees some of the top cycling teams in the world competing as they race around the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia. Not only is there a great bike race on but also festivals and associated events that take place during the race. If you can’t keep up with the professionals on your bike then why not rent a car to follow the tour around.
ICC Cricket World Cup 14 February – 29 March 2015
The 11th staging of the Cricket World Cup comes to Australia and New Zealand in 2015. This is one of the largest international sporting tournaments engaging one fifth of the worlds population. 14 countries will battle it out for cricket’s greatest prize. 26 of the 49 matches in total will be in Australia held across venues in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The 23 matches in New Zealand will be held at venues in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington. The final will be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on 29 March.
Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 12-15 March 2015
The Formula 1 season once again kicks off at Albert Park in Melbourne. 2015 marks the 20th year the Australian GP race has been held at Albert Park since it moved from Adelaide. If all goes to plan, the last 5 F1 champions will be on the grid come the 15th of March. The crowds are sure to be huge as local driver Daniel Ricciardo looks to add his name to the winners list. There is always heaps of off-track entertainment on offer to keep everyone entertained. It is a great week to be in Melbourne.
